Certificate of Deposit by a Kentucky Freedman in the Freedman's Bank

Certificate of deposit by Martin Hilliard, 29 July 1866, attached to account registration of Martin Hilliard, 7 Aug. 1866, #854, Louisville KY Branch, Registers of Signatures of Depositors in Branches of the Freedman's Savings & Trust Company, Division of Insolvent National Banks, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Record Group 101, National Archives. On the reverse: “This certificate is issued from the office of the FREEDMEN'S SAVINGS & TRUST COMPANY, 87 Cedar Street, New York, and is a legal obligation of the Company, according to the Rules and Regulations of the Deposit Book.” The agent who signed the certificate, Anson M. Sperry, was an employee of the Freedman's Bank who solicited deposits from black soldiers serving in Texas.
